Dental cleaning cost in San Diego: what to expect and how to compare quotes

There is no public dataset of dental cleaning fees for San Diego practices, so we do not publish a “San Diego average.” What we can give you is a sourced national benchmark, a checklist for comparing itemized quotes, and current information on how insurance and California Medicaid treat dental care.

National benchmark$203

CareCredit reports a $203 national benchmark for a routine exam with cleaning and X-rays, from 2023–2024 research. That is a bundled reference, not a cleaning-only price. This is a national figure, not a San Diego price.

Why there is no San Diego price table on this page

Dental offices set their own fees, and no public source reports dental cleaning prices across San Diego practices or neighborhoods. Rather than estimate local figures, we show a sourced national benchmark and help you compare real written quotes from offices you contact.

How to get comparable quotes in San Diego

Ask two or three practices for a written, itemized estimate for the same treatment. A new-patient promotion, a routine preventive visit and a deep cleaning are different appointments. Ask each office which one it is quoting and what the price includes.

Ask whether the quote covers the whole treatment or only one stage, and which follow-up visits are included. A lower headline price that leaves out part of the treatment is not a lower total.

Practices in our San Diego listings include A+ Family Dentistry, Bayho Family Dental, Mesa Family Dental, SD Smile and The Dental Express. Listing is not an endorsement; confirm services and fees directly.

Coverage in California

Insurance and California Medicaid

Private dental insurance. Many plans cover routine cleanings and exams at a high level, usually with frequency limits such as twice a year. Ask the office to send a pre-treatment estimate to your plan, and check that the dentist is in your plan’s network. Our dental insurance guide explains how PPO and DHMO networks work.

California Medicaid for adults. Adults with full-scope Medi-Cal are eligible for comprehensive dental services; adult benefits were fully restored in 2018. Starting July 1, 2026, adults 19 and older who do not qualify for federally funded full-scope Medi-Cal receive only emergency dental services, unless they are pregnant or within a year after pregnancy. Ask your Medicaid dental plan whether the specific treatment is covered.

Children. Medi-Cal members under 19 keep full dental benefits regardless of immigration status. See our Medicaid and CHIP guide.

Before booking

Questions to ask a San Diego practice

  • Does the price include a dentist’s examination?
  • Which X-rays are planned, and are they included?
  • Is fluoride optional or billed separately?
  • What changes if the exam finds I need periodontal care?
  • Are you in network for my dental plan, and will you request a pre-treatment estimate?

Ask the office to mark each item as included, excluded or not yet determined, so you can compare quotes on the same basis.
