There is no public dataset of dental crown fees for Pittsburgh practices, so we do not publish a “Pittsburgh average.” What we can give you is a sourced national benchmark, a checklist for comparing itemized quotes, and current information on how insurance and Pennsylvania Medicaid treat dental care.
CareCredit reports a $1,399 national average for a porcelain crown, with a $915–$3,254 range, from 2023–2024 research. This is a national figure, not a Pittsburgh price.

Rather than estimate local figures, we show a sourced national benchmark and help you compare real written quotes from offices you contact.
| Cost item | What to check |
|---|---|
| Crown fee | National benchmark for a porcelain crown: $1,399 average, $915–$3,254 range. |
| Material | Ask which material is quoted. |
| Buildup or root canal | Ask whether preparatory work is expected and billed separately. |
| Temporary and fitting | Confirm the temporary crown and fitting visits are included. |
Representative imageAsk two or three practices for a written, itemized estimate for the same treatment. Ask each office to quote the same tooth and material, and to list any buildup or root canal treatment separately.
Ask whether the quote covers the whole treatment or only one stage, and which follow-up visits are included. A lower headline price that leaves out part of the treatment is not a lower total.
Practices in our Pittsburgh listings include Merit Dental, Northside Dental, Refresh Dental Southside Works, Smiles by Hart and Southside Dental Pavilion. Listing is not an endorsement; confirm services and fees directly.
Private dental insurance. Crowns are usually billed as major restorative care, so ask whether waiting periods apply and how much of your annual maximum the crown will use. Ask the office to send a pre-treatment estimate to your plan, and check that the dentist is in your plan’s network. Our dental insurance guide explains how PPO and DHMO networks work.
Pennsylvania Medicaid for adults. Pennsylvania Medical Assistance covers adults 21 and older for exams, X-rays, cleanings, fillings and extractions, with limits. Services beyond those limits, such as some crowns, root canals and dentures, require a dentist-requested Benefit Limit Exception. Adult implants and orthodontia are not covered. Ask your Medicaid dental plan whether the specific treatment is covered.
Children. The adult benefit limits do not apply to children under 21. Pennsylvania CHIP also covers children’s dental care. See our Medicaid and CHIP guide.
Ask the office to mark each item as included, excluded or not yet determined, so you can compare quotes on the same basis.
