Cigna dental insurance: Plans, networks and finding a dentist

Cigna Healthcare offers two main kinds of dental coverage: dental PPO (DPPO) plans that let you see any licensed dentist, and the Cigna Dental Care DHMO, which requires you to choose a primary care dentist from its network. Which one you have changes how you should search for a dentist.

Before you callNetwork name

Your card or plan summary shows whether you have a Cigna Dental PPO or Cigna Dental Care (DHMO). DHMO members use the Cigna Dental Care Access Plus network.

How to check whether a dentist takes your Cigna plan

On cigna.com, use the provider search and pick the plan type shown on your card. For a DHMO, select Cigna Dental Care DHMO and the Access Plus network.

Many dentists are in both Cigna networks, but not all. Confirm with the office which Cigna plan they accept before you book.

Before booking

Questions to ask the dental office

  • Which network does this office participate in for my plan — and does that include the dentist I will see?
  • Will you send a pre-treatment estimate to my plan before major work?
  • How much of my annual maximum and deductible is left this year?
  • Are there waiting periods or frequency limits (for example, cleanings twice a year) that apply?
  • What will I owe if the plan pays less than the office fee?

Write down the name of the person you spoke to and the date. Coverage questions are easier to resolve later when you have a record.
